Contrary to popular belief, paper doesn’t just grow on trees––at least not when it's HP photo paper, designed to provide the most stunning photos possible. The secret? Layers. Each layer of HP photo paper has unique functions and you can choose the type of HP paper best suited to meet the demands of your home or business.
A resin coating on both the front and back of the paper create a moisture barrier that prevents warping. This resin coating also gives the front a glossy or matte coat, depending on the type of paper.
When your photos stack up in the tray, inked images won't smear or rub off thanks to a special anti-stick coating on the back of each sheet. Just another common-sense feature HP scientists invented to make printing easier.
Last but not least, there's still paper in our photo paper—it provides the pure whiteness of the paper, which improves color contrast. It also strengthens the photo paper to prevent tears and creases, using tested technology to create photos that will last for generations.

There are two types of photo paper coating technologies, swellable and nano-porous. Swellable papers, such as HP Premium Plus Photo Paper, provide superb image quality and fade resistance. They take longer to dry but typically have more fade resistance.
Nano-porous papers provide rapid ink absorption and instant dry time. HP Advanced Photo Paper has a proprietary, nano-porous coating. And since the porous coating is comprised of water insoluble ceramic pigments, it is highly water and scratch resistant. You can’t print without ink. That’s why HP ink chemists develop ink formulas in conjunction with HP photo papers.
All HP inks are subjected to more than 20 different tests for purity and more than 50 different tests for attributes such as water resistance, fade resistance and color accuracy.
While the HP ink is being developed, so is the paper on which it will live. It can take up to five years to develop and perfect HP photo paper.
