What is automatic duplex printing?

Print double sided

Duplex printing, also referred to as two-sided printing, allows you to print on both sides of the page, cutting your paper use by up to 50%. But that’s just the beginning of what this printer feature can do!

What duplex printing can do for you

Two stacks of paper
  • Save money: Duplex printing helps you save money on printing supplies by cutting your paper use by up to 50%.
  • Save time: Automatic duplex printing saves you time by allowing you to print double-sided without having to wait and reinsert the pages yourself.
  • Save space: Less paper takes up less room. It’s that simple!
  • Shrink your carbon footprint: Beyond the trees that go into making paper, there is also an environmental impact to transporting paper and producing it; imagine lessening that impact by half!

Icon indicating duplex printing selected

This icon in the Printer Shortcuts tab of your Printer Properties is another indication that two-sided printing is set up.

To find out if your printer supports duplex printing, refer to your printer manual or look for the Two-sided (Duplex printing) or Print on both sides drop-down menu in the Printer Properties dialog box on your PC (sometimes found in the Printer Shortcuts tab).

If your printer doesn’t currently support automatic duplex printing, see below to Find a printer with built-in automatic two-sided printing.

Presentation Printing shortcut selected

Presentation Printing allows you the option to print on both sides automatically, too.

Setting your printer options to automatic duplexing is simple!

  1. Go to your PC’s Printer dialog box and click on Properties.
  2. Click on the Printing Shortcuts tab, and select Two-sided (Duplex) Printing from the drop-down menu.
  3. Select Automatic from the drop-down menu.

For detailed visuals, refer to the demo above.

Recommended paper:
A duplexer can support paper from 16-28 lb bond. HP Premium paper is the heaviest brochure and presentation paper that can work with an automatic duplexer. For heavier weights, such as HP Brochure and Flyer paper, you still have the option to Print double-sided manually.

For presentation quality documents:
There are special presentation quality settings under the Printing shortcuts tab, but they still allow you to select automatic duplexing.

Additional ways to save resources

  • More than one page per side
Try the Zoom option, found in the lower-right-hand corner of your print dialogue box. By shrinking the size of your printed pages, this feature allows you to choose the number of Pages per sheet you will print—a great way to conserve paper if you only need to check the design layout or margin settings of the document you’re printing. You can fit anywhere from 1 to16 pages onto one sheet of paper!
