Introduction
Copying or scanning multiple documents can be a time consuming process. Your HP printer’s automatic document feeder (ADF) can save you time by processing multiple projects at once with minimal supervision. Discover how to use your ADF, how to keep it in tip-top shape, and how to clear and prevent a jam.
Why use an automatic document feeder?
Free up your hands so you can work on other projects while the printer does its job.
Many HP printers have an ADF, making it easy to print multiple projects at one time.
Your printer’s ADF also allows you to:
- Easily copy, scan, or fax multiple- page documents.
- No more standing and copying one page at a time—copy up to 50 pages at once!
- Archive your documents online using the Google Docs e-Storage App.1
- Easily duplex pages by combining multiple 1-page documents into 2-page documents.

How to use your ADF
Step 1-2: Load your document, print side up, into the ADF until you hear a beep indicating that the loaded pages were detected.
Step 3:Slide the width guides inward until they stop at the left and right edges of the pages.
Using an HP printer’s ADF is easy. We’ll show you how using an HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium e-All-in-One:
- Load your document, print side up, into the document feeder tray. Make sure the top edge of the document goes in first.
- Slide the paper into the ADF until you hear a beep or see a message on the touchscreen indicating that the loaded pages were detected.
- Slide the width guides inward until they stop at the left and right edges of the pages.
- On the printer’s touchscreen, select Copy, Scan, or Fax. For example, if you choose Copy, you’ll then:
- Choose the number of copies to make.
- Using the right and left arrows on the touchscreen, select which duplexing options you want (1:1, 1:2, 2:1, 2:2).
- Choose whether you want copies to be in Color or Black-and-white.
TIP: Do not put photographs or thick, specialty paper through your printer’s ADF or try to add paper to the ADF when it’s feeding pages. This could cause a paper jam.
Keep your ADF running smoothly

1) ADF Cover 2) Rollers 3) Separator pad
Your ADF should work properly without any extra effort on your part. However, if you notice your ADF picks up multiple pages or has problems picking up plain paper, here are five simple steps to get your ADF back in working order:
- Remove all originals from the document feeder tray.
- Lift the ADF cover. This provides easy access to the rollers and separator pad.
- Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with distilled water, squeezing any excess liquid from the cloth.
- Use the damp cloth to wipe any residue off the rollers or separator pad.
- Close the cover of the ADF.
TIP: If residue does not come off using distilled water, try using isopropyl (rubbing alcohol).
How to prevent and clear jams
Many HP Officejets and LaserJets, like the HP LaserJet Pro CM1415fnw Color MFP , feature ADFs. To keep your printer’s ADF running smoothly, don’t combine different paper sizes or overfill it.
To clear a jam, gently pull the jammed paper out of the rollers
Here are some easy steps to prevent paper jams—or clear them—to help get you back to printing as quickly as possible.
To prevent a paper jam from occurring:
- Don’t overfill your ADF.
- Use paper types that are recommended for the printer.
- Do not combine different paper types and sizes in the ADF tray.
- Adjust the paper-width guide on the ADF to fit snugly against all paper.
- Make sure the paper-width guide does not bend the paper.
- Ensure that paper loaded in the ADF lays flat and the edges are not bent or torn.
- Prevent curled or wrinkled paper by storing all unused paper flat in a resealable bag.
To clear a paper jam in the ADF:
- Lift the cover of the ADF.
- Gently pull the paper out of the rollers.
- Close the cover of the ADF.
TIP: If the paper tears when you’re removing it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces that might remain inside the device. If you don’t remove all the pieces of paper from the printer, more paper jams are likely to occur.
