Introduction

A scanner or All-in-One with a glass flatbed that handles legal-sized documents can help smooth your paper trail. Learn how to print, scan, and copy legal-sized documents and which HP devices can help- make the process fast and simple.

Benefits of legal-sized scanner glass

HP All-in-Ones and scanners with legal-sized or larger scanner glass make it easiest to deal with legal-sized (8.5" x 14") documents. For instance:

  • A flatbed allows you to copy documents in any condition, while an ADF (automatic document feeder) may not accept wrinkled, torn, or fragile documents.
  • Flatbeds are useful for those who work with legal-sized documents such as:
    • Contracts
    • Trusts
    • Real estate documents
    • Government documents
    • Orders/Invoices

Touch the Copy icon on the touchscreen home screen to access the Settings menu and change your paper size to Legal.

When making copies of legal-sized documents, you’ll first need to adjust the paper-size setting to Legal:

    1. Select the Copy icon on the touchscreen
    2. Touch Settings
    3. Using the arrows on the right side of the display, scroll through the list of options and touch Paper Size
    4. Touch Legal
    5. Touch Done

    6. Typically, copy settings will remain for the current job only. If the majority of your copies are legal-sized documents, it’s useful to save Legal as the default setting. After completing the steps above and setting Legal as your new paper size setting:

    7. Touch Settings on the Copy menu home screen
    8. Using the arrows on the right side of the display, scroll through the list of options and touch Set as New Default
    9. Touch Yes to confirm new setting

If you want your device to print faxes on legal-sized paper, you must first disable the Automatic Reduction feature* (On is the default setting):

    1. Select the Fax icon on the touchscreen
    2. Touch Settings
    3. Touch Fax Setup
    4. Touch Advanced Fax Setup
    5. Touch Automatic Reduction
    6. Touch Off to disable the Automatic Reduction feature

After you’ve turned off the Automatic reduction feature, set your default paper setting to legal-sized. Read on to learn how.

    * The Automatic Reduction feature reduces the size of an incoming fax so that it fits on the paper that is loaded, allowing you to receive a legal-sized fax even if your device is not currently set to use legal-sized paper.
