Introduction
Your printer can be a wonderful creative tool, especially when you see how much there is to print on beyond “regular paper.” Keep reading for tips and inspiration.
Printing on photo paper
For convenient photo printing, HP makes photo paper in a variety of sizes (from 4" x 6" to 13" x 19") and in several finishes.
For the ultimate in convenience and value when printing photos, try HP Photo Value Packs, which include the right amounts of ink and photo paper for a set number of prints.
HP photo paper is specifically designed to produce high-quality, color-rich images that look—and last—like traditionally developed photographs.
- For crisp, clear photos, use your printer’s “Best quality” setting.
- Set your printed photos aside on a flat surface for about 24 hours before framing.
- If you notice your prints have uneven colors, faded patches, or horizontal streaks, it may be that your printer is low on ink.

- HP photo papers come in a range of finishes and a variety of sizes, including convenient 4" x 6" for affordable everyday prints and large portrait-sized papers for studio-quality enlargements.

Printing on iron-on transfers
Iron-ons aren’t just for T-shirts! Renew, reuse, and recycle in style with this Organic green iron-on design added to a tote-bag. Additional free, downloadable designs are available at the HP Creative Studio.
Iron-on transfers are a surprisingly easy way to add flair and a personal stamp to your wardrobe. Use the following tips with the free designs available at the HP Creative Studio.
- Use inkjet printers only; laser printers can melt your iron-on and damage the printer.
- For regular iron-on transfers, use white fabric. If you’d rather use color fabric, be sure to use the appropriate transfers.
- Remember that the iron-on should look like a mirror image on screen and in print in order to be oriented correctly when you iron it onto the fabric. This is especially important when using iron-ons with text.

Printing on card paper

These Fresh elegant thank-you notes are part of an entire wedding kit and just one of the free greeting card designs available to print at the HP Creative Studio.
A versatile alternative to traditional greeting card paper is HP Brochure and Flyer paper, which comes in matte and glossy finishes.
- Before printing your finished card, print a preview on plain paper. Make sure everything looks the way you want it to look, and check spelling.
- When you are ready to print the card, set your printer to its highest quality setting.
- If you are not using pre-scored cards, create a crisp fold by laying a metal-edged ruler where you’d like the fold to be. Then use a scoring tool, such as the back of a butter knife, to create a straight line and make the card easier to fold.
Printing on vellum

Because it's translucent, vellum works well for crafts such as paper lanterns.

Vellum projects work especially well with laser printers, like the HP LaserJet Pro 400 Color Printer M451nw—one of many HP Color LaserJet printers that are good for business as well as creative endeavors.
Vellum is a translucent paper with a subtle texture and a smooth surface. Vellum paper may be solid, marbled, metallic, flecked with gold and silver, or embedded with flowers or leaves.
Because you can see through vellum, it is often used to layer on top of other papers.
Vellum looks elegant, and is perfect for invitations, greeting cards, and creating small envelopes for scrapbook pages.
- Vellum works either with inkjet or laser printers, but be sure to use vellum specifically made for one or the other.
- If you are using inkjet vellum, use the “Draft” mode on your printer so that less ink is sprayed onto the paper (vellum can’t absorb as much as regular paper).
- To avoid smearing, allow your printed pieces to dry completely before handling.
- Vellum creases easily, so handle it carefully.
- The natural oils in your hands can smudge vellum, so be sure your hands are clean and dry before handling it.
Printing on HP Brochure and Flyer paper

HP Brochure and Flyer paper is the best choice to make a durable year-at-a-glance calendar that will last from January to December. Easily upload your own photos to make this calendar and many others at the HP Creative Studio.
Thicker than regular paper, HP Brochure and Flyer paper is designed for double-sided printing. The paper produces excellent print quality in both full color and black and white, and is great for greeting cards and durable craft projects.
- HP Brochure and Flyer paper comes in 8.5" x 11" (matte or glossy).
- Tri-fold is also available—perfect for brochures.
- Only use manual two-sided printing with this heavy-weight paper, because it is too thick to go through an automatic duplexer.
- Browse HP Brochure and Flyer paper at the HP Home and Home Office store.
