Printer connected by USB setup method

To use the USB setup method, temporarily connect your printer to your computer using the USB cable. Once setup is complete, you can remove the cable to print wirelessly.

In order to begin printing, you first need to connect your wireless printer to an established wireless network. You can do this one of four ways:

  • Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS): This method consists of following a few simple steps on the printer’s control panel or touchscreen before pressing the WPS button on your wireless router.

  • Wireless Setup Wizard: This method consists of following steps on the printer’s control panel or touchscreen. During these quick steps, you’ll be prompted to enter your network name and password.

  • USB setup method: This method uses the printer’s installation software and a USB cable. It will walk you through the steps of temporarily connecting your printer to your computer using the USB cable. Once the setup is complete, you will remove the USB cable to print wirelessly.

  • HP Smart Install: This method is available with select HP LaserJets, allowing you to connect your computer to the printer with a USB cable, install, and print—no CD required!

NOTE: If you choose the USB setup or the HP Smart Install method, the steps below are included in the setup process—which means you’re already connected to print from that computer!

After completing the WPS setup method or the Wireless Setup Wizard, you’ll need to install the printer’s software onto any computer you’d like to print from. Read on for installation directions for both PCs and Macs.

Download your printer’s software

Step 1: Select Download drivers and software (and firmware).

Step 4: Select your printer’s operating system.

To begin, you’ll need the software CD that came with your printer. If you have it, you can continue on to installing your printer’s software.

Before you begin:

  • Make sure to restart your computer before installing the software.
  • You may need to authorize the software file before opening. Make sure to accept any other firewall pop-up messages while installing software.
  • For a setup experience most similar to the steps below, you should download the printer’s driver rather than using the CD that came with it.

You can download up-to-date drivers from HP.com:

  1. Select Download drivers and software (and firmware).
  2. Enter your printer model and click Go.
  3. Select your printer if multiple printers are listed.
  4. Select your printer’s operating system and click Next.
  5. Click Driver. You can then choose what type of download you’d like, including Basic Print and Scan Driver or Full Feature Software and Driver.
  6. After selecting which version you’d like, click Download.

You’ve successfully connected your computer to your wireless printer!

Once you’ve downloaded the software or inserted the CD into your PC’s CD drive, you’re ready to begin installing! Make sure your computer is connected to your router, either wirelessly or via an Ethernet cord.

HP software will walk you through the installation process, step-by-step. These steps—illustrated at left—are for the HP Officejet Pro series, though they will be similar for most new wireless printers. From your computer:

  1. Initiate the software, by clicking the downloaded file or inserting the CD.
  2. After the basic device software has been installed (which happens automatically), you’ll be asked how you are going to connect the printer to your computer. Choose Network (Ethernet/wireless) then click Next.
  3. Your computer will seek out the wireless printers in the area. Select the printer you’d like to connect with and click Next.
    • Do you live close to neighbors who may also have a wireless printer? You can check the listed MAC (Media Access Control) address against your printer’s by touching the wireless icon on your printer’s touchscreen and comparing numbers.

That’s it! You will receive a message if you’ve successfully connected your computer to the printer. If your printer has faxing or digital filing capabilities, you’ll be asked to enter additional information. You will also be prompted to register your printer on HP.com.

If you are using a Mac, the steps are very similar to those above. From your computer:

  1. Initiate the software, by clicking the downloaded file or inserting the CD.
  2. After reading the “Introduction” window, click Continue.
  3. Select your printer if more than one is listed, then click Continue.
  4. In the “Installation Type” window, you can choose what type of download you’d like, by clicking Customize… When finished, click Install. The installation could take a few minutes.
  5. When the installation is complete, click Continue. Your computer will seek out the wireless printers in the area. Select the printer you’d like to connect with and click Next.
    • If your neighbors have a wireless printer, make sure you connect to your printer by checking your printer’s MAC address. Touch the wireless icon on your printer’s touchscreen and compare numbers.
  6. After your computer locates the printer, you’ll be asked to enter additional information if your printer has faxing or digital filing capabilities.
  7. Before you can print, you must add the printer to your system. Click Add Printer, locate your printer in the new window, click Add, then click Continue.
  8. Choose if you want to install the HP inkjet widget onto your dashboard to monitor your printer’s ink levels. Click Continue.
  9. You will then be prompted to register your printer on HP.com.

Your set up is now complete! Click OK.
