Introduction
You may already be using paper that you’ve previously printed on, but that means switching it out any time you want to print on regular paper. However, if your printer has a second paper tray or feed slot, you can dedicate a paper tray specifically to recycled paper. Whether for your home or home office, learn how this thrifty, eco-friendly technique can help you save.
Why use a second tray?
Using a second paper tray isn’t just for offices. Print recipes, directions, or e-mail—guilt-free!
Many HP printers feature a second paper tray or feed slot, making it easy to print on both recycled (and non-recycled) paper. When you set up a second paper tray for recycled paper, you can also:
- Print recipes, directions, e-mail, or internal business documents, guilt-free
- Print on either premium paper or recycled paper without having to change paper in your printer
- Have a tray dedicated to letterhead or different media sizes including envelopes, legal-size paper, and more
Don’t have a printer with a second paper tray? You can still reuse clean, un-stapled paper by putting it in your printer’s main tray. Discover more tips for eco-friendly printing.
Setting up a second tray
Save documents that have been used only on one side in a convenient location. Make sure all documents are facing the same way.
Load recycled paper face up or face down, depending on which side your machine prints. Try a test sheet to get started.
It’s easy to set up and use a recycled paper tray! You’ll find step-by-step printing directions below, though you can use these setup tips regardless of which printer you use.
Start saving paper. Once you’re through with a document that has only one side printed on, save it in a convenient location close to your printer.
Make sure all the documents are facing the same direction and are without staples, folds, or tears. Also, don’t reuse sheets that are heavy on ink. Over time, this ink can build up on your printer’s rollers.
Decide which paper you use most. With a secondary tray, you can keep both recycled paper and nicer paper conveniently loaded and at the ready. Dedicate your larger tray to whichever kind you print on the most.
Load paper correctly into the paper tray. Consult your printer manual or print a test sheet if you’re not sure on which side of the paper—face up or face down—your machine prints. Then, load all of your recycled paper facing the same direction.
And that’s it! You’re ready to print. Remember which tray you’ve loaded with recycled paper—you may want to make a sticky note until you can remember which is which.
Printing to a second tray

You can choose which tray to copy or scan from, using the Settings Menu on your printer’s touchscreen.

On the printer’s touchscreen, Touch Tray Select, then choose between Tray 1 or
Tray 2.
With many HP printers, you can print from your secondary paper tray both from your PC and from the printer’s touchscreen. We’ll show you how to do both using the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium e-All-in-One, which has a built-in secondary tray.
To print from the touchscreen:
- After touching Copy or Scan, touch Settings.
- Under the settings menu, touch the down arrow then touch Tray Select.
- Choose Tray 1 or Tray 2.
- Touch Done.
- Touch Black or Color to begin printing.
To print from a PC:
- On the File menu in your software application, click Print. Make sure the printer you want to use is selected.
- Click the button that opens the Properties dialog box. (Depending on your software application, this button might be called Properties, Options, Printer Setup, Printer, or Preferences.)
- Click on Paper/Quality.
- Under the Paper source menu, select the tray you’d like to print to.
- Click OK.
- Click Print or OK to begin printing.
You can choose to make the tray with recycled paper your default tray. Remember, anytime you need to print on regular paper, simply select the other tray.
Built-in vs. separate
