Cable Port How it's used
USB cable
USB port
Transmits data and comes in standard, audio adapter, and 2.0 (high-speed).
Example: A keyboard to a PC.
Mini-USB
Mini-USB port
Transmits data and has one small, square tip.
Example: A digital camera to a printer.
Component video
Component video port
Transmits video and comes in standard-definition and high-definition (HD). Higher quality than S-video and composite.
Example: A TV to a DVD player.
S-Video cable
S-Video port
Transmits video. The “S” stands for “separate.” Higher quality than composite.
Example: A TV to a VCR.
Yellow RCA cable
Yellow RCA port
Transmits video. Usually has a yellow tip.
Example: A DVD/VHS player to a TV.
FireWire cable
FireWire port
Transmits high-speed data. Four-pin is more common. FireWire is also called i.LINK and IEEE1394.
Example: A digital camcorder to a PC.
DVI cable
DVI port
DVI-D transmits digital video.
DVI-I transmits digital and analog video.
Example: An HD tuner to HD-ready TV.
VGA cable
VGA port
Transmits video from a PC to a monitor or television.
Example: A notebook PC to a monitor.
HDMI cable
HDMI port
Transmits and protects copyrighted digital video and audio.
Example: An HD tuner to an HD-ready TV.
Coaxial cable
Coaxial port
Transmits digital audio.
Example: Speakers to an HP Digital Entertainment Center.
Toslink cable
Optical port
Transmits digital audio.
Example: Speakers to an HP Digital Entertainment Center.
Composite/Stereo cable
Composite/Stereo port
Transmits left and right channel audio.
Example: Stereo speakers to a receiver.
5.1 Channel Outputs
5.1 Channel Outputs port
Transmits up to six specific audio channels (such as left, right, center, left surround, etc.) from your DVD player to an external device.
Example: A DVD player to a receiver.
RCA mono
RCA mono port
Transmits analog audio.
Example: A subwoofer to a home theater system.
This system may require upgraded and/or separately purchased hardware and/or a DVD drive to install the Windows 7 software and take full advantage of Windows 7 functionality. See
