Introduction

Environmental responsibility is not new to HP. For decades, HP’s efforts, innovations and designs have reflected our long-standing commitment to the environment and led to award-winning programs both in the U.S. and globally.

As a result, HP was named one of 10 corporate “Green Giants” in the world by Fortune Magazine in 2007 and rated as the No. 1 high-tech company (8th overall) on Newsweek’s list of 1,800 Greenest Companies in 2007.

Energy efficiency

As one of the first companies to comply with the U.S. EPA ENERGY STAR® program, HP has been offering PCs with energy-efficient features since 1992.1

Today, HP’s Power Management Technology can reduce PC energy use by up to 45%,2 contributing to a lower total cost of ownership and helping to maintain environmental consciousness. HP PCs now move faster into sleep mode, where they use less power, and are quick to wake up—so they use less energy and make less noise.

HP estimates that in 2008 the total energy saved by HP Power Management Technology in consumer PC products alone was 350,000,000 kg of CO2—equivalent to removing 76,000 cars from the road for one year. Find out more about HP’s energy-efficient consumer products on our ENERGY STAR®-qualified product page.

Design for Environment

HP’s Design for Environment (DfE) program brings together the company’s designers, engineers and environmental product stewards to promote conservation while delivering value. HP considers environmental impact throughout a product’s lifecycle, from design, manufacturing and distribution to your personal use, reuse and recycling.

Our DfE program drives us to reduce the amount of product materials and increase energy efficiency, and ensures that our suppliers meet our high standards. Efficient operations can save energy and reduce waste. Smaller, lighter products, such as the HP TouchSmart IQ and Special Edition PCs, feature an improved packaging design that helps streamline shipping and reduce C02 emissions.

You can count on energy-saving features when your HP ENERGY STAR®-qualified products are in use. Plus, you can depend on HP to be there with a range of innovative take-back programs when you’re ready for something new.

Product take back

HP is an experienced leader in product recycling worldwide, and carefully monitors and certifies the practices of our recycling partners. To date, HP has recycled over 1 billion cumulative pounds around the world, with a goal of reaching 2 billion pounds by 2010.

The HP Consumer Buyback and Planet Partners Recycling Program reduces the amount of electronics in landfills by refurbishing technology for further use or safely recycling it. HP offers U.S. customers a variety of convenient product reuse and responsible end-of-life programs. Options include:
  • Cash back for your unwanted PCs, monitors, printers, digital cameras, PDAs and smartphones of any brand.
  • Free responsible recycling of your HP and Compaq products if they are of no value.
  • Donation of your old computer to the National Cristina Foundation. You receive a tax receipt and benefit others by providing a PC to individuals who otherwise have no access to computer technology.
